STONEHILL THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS ITS SPRING PRODUCTION
Issued 4/2001Stonehill Theatre Company presents, Ubu and Friends, two one-act comedies, directed by guest director, Sebastian Trainor. Performances will be held April 5 through April 7 at 8:00 p.m.

Ubu, by Jeff Goode (adapted from Alfred Jarry), is a grotesque farce about the monstrous Ubu. Originally written as a parody of one of Alfred Jarry's teachers, it swiftly turned into a satire of society as a whole.
Pere Ubu, the title character is a gluttonous, greedy, cruel, incompetent individual who, with the help of his cunning wife, slaughters the royal family of Poland in order to ascend the throne. The plays' scatological references, ridiculous style and bastardized language caused the audience to riot when it was first produced. It was later championed by the Surrealists and Dadaists in the 1920's, who recognized in Ubu Roi the first Absurdist drama.
Humulus The Mute, by Jean Anouilh, is the comic story of a young aristocrat who is plagued by the inability to speak more than one word each day. With the help of his personal tutor, Humulus outwits his grandmother and devises a plan to win the affection of his true love, Helen. The results of this plan make for a hysterical surprise conclusion.
