On the night in question, Dick Piston, Hotel Detective, is determined not to work a minute of overtime. So at ten minutes to midnight—and ten minutes until his shift ends—Piston is less than eager to help the half-dressed woman who runs in screaming of murder. Setting an egg timer for exactly ten minutes, Piston is adamant that he will only help the woman until the time runs out. But will it be enough time to discover what happened to the woman’s dead husband? In the quick-witted back-and-forth questioning that follows, Piston tries to unravel the mystery at an alarmingly and questionably fast pace.

And ... Action by Dan Roth. Director, Bill George; SM, Katharine Tilmes ’16
Cast: Will Anderson ’16, Marc Mühleisen ’15, Cassidy Paradis ’16, Kalila Morsink ’15, Alexander Hewlett ’18
This hilarious comedy uses the play-within-a-play format, following a troupe of actors as it prepares for the staged reading of a new play. Murphy's Law reigns supreme as the harried director deals with: an angry leading man; a know-it-all thespian; a miffed grande dame and a tardy manipulative ingénue.

Armed Robbery for Dummies by Paul R. Roman. Director, Coco Stiff ’15; SM, Graeme Hall ’15
Cast: David Winkler ’15, Eli Kaplan ’18, Pippa Spindel ’16
Frank is an average guy in need of a change. So, naturally, he decides he's going to commit armed robbery. He calls George, his best friend and a recent parolee, to help him, but everything quickly goes very wrong when a dead body ends up in the middle of Frank's living room. Turns out body disposal isn't as easy as it looks.

Bar Mitzvah Boy by Samara Siskind. Director, Jason Martin ’15; SM, Jillian Lerner ’16
Cast: Ellie Goldberg ’17, Danny Klain ’15

Cabin Pressure adapted from a BBC Podcast. Director, Perry Levitch ’15; SM, Claire Brown ’16
Cast: Tajin Rogers ’16, Adam Forsyth ’15, Jacob Kaplan ’16, Claire Lewis ’18
Two bickering pilots, an optimistic flight attendant, and a paranoid airline owner attempt a 7,000-mile flight.

Controlling Interest by Wayne Rawley. Director, Emma Stern ’15; SM, Danny Thimm ’16
Cast: Marcus Lustig ’15, Mac Andrews ’15, Chris Oakley ’17, Maddy Clark ’16, Grace Phillips ’15
Unconventional office workers discussing a very important topic.

The Levee by Taylor Mac Bowyer. Director, Jenny Riemer ’15; SM, Adam Greiner
Cast: Gabby Jacoby ’17, Ethan Dan ’17
The Levee is a short play that follows the life of two young adults who are going through one of the worst fears any couple could face. This high-emotion play takes us along this rollercoaster ride with them and ends with ... well, you will see.

Love and Death by Kathryn Chetkovich. Director, Jacob Roberts ’15; SM, Elena Pastreich ’17
     Cast: Hope Lasater-Guttmann ’18, Ian Askew ’15
A witty one-act comedy about why we lie to the people we love.

Murder by Midnight by Jeff Goode. Director, Laura Smith ’15; SM, Jadine Sonoda ’15
Cast: Aidan Kelliher ’16, Isabel Boyer ’17, Nico Von Friedeburg ’18

Naomi in the Living Room by Christopher Durang. Director, Talia Goldberg ’15; SM, Maaike Lanstra-Corn ’17
Cast: Jamie O’Brien ’16, Matthew Ishimaru ’16, Esme Levitch ’18

1. Kitsch doesn't belong in the living room.
2. All of John and Johnna's children are dead.
3. This takes place in a dining room.

She’s Fabulous by Jack Neary. Director, Rebecca Berger ’15; SM, Afriti Bankwalla ’15
Cast: Eve Jones ’15, Katie Abramowitz ’17
What happens when three friends compete for a role but only one takes the stage? Does jealousy overtake the two left in the audience? Do they learn from each other or is this the end of their friendship? Find out in She's Fabulous.

They Fell (from Almost, Maine) by John Cariani. Director, Jim Mahady; SM, Simone Liu ’18
     Cast: Jack Szulc-Donnell ’17, Martin Glusker ’17

Cast: Abigail Rosen ’16, Gabriel Smith ’18, Julia Smith ’16, May Robison ’17

Two theater students direct scenes

Payge Quintana, Staff Writer - March 26, 2015

Two students received the chance to control every aspect of a single scene of a play for their directing class Friday, March 6.

Andrew McCutcheon, senior theater major, chose to direct a scene from "Murder by Midnight: The Further Adventures of Dick Piston (But Not Much Further)" by Jeff Goode.

"I chose the play after reading several others and determined it was the best one," McCutcheon said.

The directors' responsibilities were to do everything they thought would make the scene the best it could be and transform it.

"The directors are responsible for all aspects of the production just as they would be if it was a real world opportunity," Jim Bartruff, theater director and professor of communication and theater. "They select the script, prepare for auditions, cast the play, rehearse, organize the tech, usher, gather props - whatever they need to do to get the show on its feet."

Directing the scenes is part of the directing one class, taught by Bartruff every spring semester.

John Alfrey, senior secondary speech theater education major, has directed a scene before for the class and has participated in two others.

"The feeling of directing is a challenging one," Alfrey said. "There is a lot to think about while directing a script. 'What are they given circumstances?' 'What did the playwright mean by this line?' Tackling those, and many more questions like that first allows the director to understand what the playwright meant while writing the work."

Theater classes give students a hands on learning experience in what they are interested in.

"Students in theater learn by studying, sharing and by doing," Bartruff said. "Every chance a student of theater has to perform is a vital learning experience, regardless of size, time or venue."

While preparing for the scenes, "The Treehouse Effect" cast and crew were also getting ready for their production.

Some of the students involved in the scenes also participated in the play. For example, McCutcheon was the sound designer and Alfrey was one of the cast members.

"It wasn't too difficult to keep the two parts from directing scenes and 'The Treehouse Effect' separate," Alfrey said. "When in one rehearsal you get into a character and while at another you get into another character. The worlds never collide as long as you can focus at the rehearsal you are at."

Directing the scenes is a requirement for the class. Every director has a different style and a different drive for their scenes. However, with this being for a grade, the students are trying to do the best they can.

"(My inspiration for the scene was) just my own drive to present the best production I could," McCutcheon said.

GMC's Upcoming One Acts! By Seraphina Mallon-Breiman

Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 3:43PM

Over the past couple of weeks, the GMC theater department has been working arduously to rehearse a series of 10 one-act short plays for an upcoming production next weekend, April 16-19. Different plays will be performed each night, so make sure to come out twice!

All of the shows are being student-directed by a handful of young adults in one of professor Paula Mann's acting classes. So from the first step of casting the shows, all the way to opening night, these students have been in charge of what is happening when. Very exciting!

While many of the shows range from comedic and crazy to satirical and sad, I was cast in a two-person show called 'Heart in the Ground', with fellow student Robert Holloway, directed by Maddie Mielke. This show is a bit wild, taking place on a farm in the west a couple of decades ago. The two characters, Karen and Lee, are both relatively young and recently out of two mentally unstable social institutions: prison, and an insane asylum. The play is mainly set around a conversation they have revolving around the ways of the world and their deceased child.

I highly encourage everyone to come out and support their friends in these upcoming productions! This production has the most actors within it that a GMC theater production has seen in over 5 years. The cast list is as follows:

"Bug"  directed by Andrew Bullard
Dillon Bryant
Emma Jeanne Page

my name is Jeremy Kluth. I am a senior at Highlands Ranch High School and I am involved in the theatre program at the school currently in Theatre VI. In a school year, we do three plays and one musical. As of now, the school is doing the Wizard of Oz. This spring, the last "play" of the year is ten to fifteen minute plays the students in Theatre VI (including me) are directing. So we were told by our theatre teacher to find three plays that we are interested in doing and bring a copy of the script into class. I read your play "Murder by Midnight" and thought it was amazing knowing that it is one of the three plays I am considering directing. In regards to all rights of performing and public reading, I am inquiring if it's okay to make a copy of your script to be publicly read and possibly performed.

There were many fine auditions. You made it hard to decide. We will need people to move props, run sound, run lights and help with ticket taking and refreshments. Please stay involved. Theater is not just about those on stage.

I am filling out a proposal form for the theatre group at the community college I attend. We are putting on student directed one acts and I am thinking about directing Murder By Midnight. My initial question is: What company holds the rights to the play, or is it you who holds the rights? They are asking us. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Colin Sarff Northern Essex Community College

Gannon Building

Directed by Andrew Fedewa
My name is Andrew Fedewa and im a student at Lansing community college. I am currently taking a play directing class and for our final exam we must pick a 10 min 1 act play and cast and direct it. I was searching for one and i found yours and loved it and would like to use it for my final project. I emailing you to because i would like to use your play for my final project if its okay with you. My email is andrewfedewa@yahoo.com
Hi again, I don't know if you remember me but I was the one interested doing your play for my class. I'm contacting you because I wanted to find out how you see the appearance of your characters because Sunday and Monday night of this week we had casting call for my classes plays. I am currently almost finished with fulfilling the part/paper work for the royalties. I see the bellhop as either the pretty boy/attractive or thought about making him a nerd or really ugly to add contrast between him and Dick Piston. The woman I have considered making older to possibly give the appearance that she is a gold digging cougar. Now Dick Piston i picture wearing what a detective at a police station wheres the suspenders that hold there guns and or a trench coat and pipe etc. Also their was something I didn't understand along with my actress which is the part of the Woman and Bellhop acting like chimpanzee's we didn't understand this, is it to show that they are out of their minds and that Dick Piston and The Woman's husband were the only ones in their right minds and sain?

directed by Kyle Banquer

CAST
PISTON ... Matt
MRS. GUY ... Olivia
BELLHOP ... Christian

NOTE TO SELF: in Kyle's very next directing project, one of the actors is Olivia Calamia. Possibly the same Olivia?

I took a class called Directing I back in college, and it changed my life forever. It made me realize just how much I enjoy crafting a story onstage that other people can derive joy from, and the feeling one gets from the audience's enjoyment-every gasp, every laugh, and every round of applause-is equally wonderful and addictive.

The first play I ever directed was a 10 minute slapstick comedy titled Murder by Midnight, written by Jeff Goode. It featured a wonderfully unqualified hotel detective named Dick Piston who attempts to solve a murder case on behalf of a woman wearing nothing but a towel. The production lampooned every trope contained within Film Noir and then some, and ended with a 'killer' gun fight and a wonderful saxophone solo.

Online resume for Olivia Sarah Marie Tilley lists at as one of her credits. "Principal Role" - presumably Mrs. Guy
Her resume appears to be in approximately chronological order:
  • Operation PMS from Outer Space - Minor Role - Pulse Theatre -
  • A Seance In Time - Principal Role - Live History Shows -
  • Nightmare Circus - Minor Role - Theatre 4.669 -
  • Ultraviolet Love - Principal Role - Theatre 4.669 -
  • House Show - Principal Role - Ottawa Fringe Festival -
  • Slag - Principal Role - University of Ottawa -
  • Attempts on Her Life - Principal Role - University of Ottawa -
  • 30:2 - Lead Role - Youth Infringement Festival -

  • The Proposal - Principal Role - Red Carpet Theatre Society -
  • Murder by Midnight - Principal Role - University of Ottawa -
  • Like Dreaming, Backwards - Lead Role - Red Carpet Theatre Society -
  • Hamlet - Principal Role - Stratford Shakespeare School -
    Operation PMS is 2018
Ultraviolet was first performed in 2017 and then again at 2018 Ottawa Fringe
30:2 (Youth Infringement Festival) was in 2016
    The Proposal was February 25, 26, 27, 2015
Like Dreaming Backwards was Sept 24-26, 2015
which makes it likely that Murder by Midnight was in 2015
NOTE however that higher up on her resume is a 2017 production, so this is not an exact reverse chronological order (i.e. the two Red Carpet shows appear to be in the wrong order. But that makes it impossible to say exactly when Murder by Midnight (between them) was performed.
Second online resume confirms most of these dates (but ends in 2016):

Summer One-Act Bonanza July 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 2015 Call for directors and comedies! We are now accepting applications for our 2015 Summer One-Act Bonanza. If you are interested in directing or submitting a play for consideration, send your comedy of less than 20 minutes to Bob Freed at information@oldacademyplayers.org by March 5, 2015. If you'd like to direct, but do not have a particular show in mind, that's okay, too.
Founded in 2009 by Old Academy Players' member Chris Schenk, the Summer One-Act Bonanza is an opportunity to feature new playwrights and directors on the Old Academy stage. Chris, who spent four years with Old Academy as an actor, writer, producer, publicity chairperson and newsletter editor, produced the first two seasons of the One-Act Bonanza until moving to Chicago. He lost his fight with cancer in March 2012, but his legacy lives on through this delightful annual event. This year there are two World Premiere comedies, showcasing the works of Old Academy members Thomas Abraham and Brenna McBride! The entire Bonanza is filled with wonderful comedies which are diversified, fun-filled and bound to delight you! They are as follows: The Chocolate Affair by Stephanie Alison Walker, directed by Loretta Lucy Miller: A woman steals her daughter's Halloween candy and hides out in a motel room to enjoy her forbidden love. A Perfect Match written and directed by Thomas Abraham: Joel and Abby are searching for their perfect match and a computer dating site says they are compatible. But exactly how truthful have they been? Murder by Midnight by Jeff Goode, directed by Kristen Hammond: Hotel detective Dick Piston has less than ten minutes to solve a brutal murder for a nude widow, or risk losing her case to the day shift. Can he crack the case before his shift is up? Sun Dried by Edna Ferber (adapted for stage - Walter Wyckes), directed by Pat Pelletreau: A young aspiring, struggling writer from the mid-west dries her hair on a New York City rooftop and finds unexpected inspiration. The New World Ain't Cheap by David Vazdauskas, directed by Clinton Cleaver: Christopher Columbus and his conniving young wife try to wrangle ships and sailors out of King Ferdinand, who would rather fight wars over the Old World. Scripted written and directed by Brenna McBride: Jenny has written her own happy ending but what happens when life refuses to imitate art? Senior Coffee by Stanley Toledo, directed by Susan Zingale-Baird: A young waitress has a fight on her hands when she tries to serve free coffee to a senior citizen.
The Old Academy Players is a non-profit community theater established in 1923 and located in the East Falls section of Philadelphia. Our home is the charming, historic Old Academy building, where Grace Kelly began her acting career!

Dear Jeff, We are an amateur group called the Stag Theatre Company we perform at the Plaza, Stag Theatre London Road Sevenoaks Kent. We wish to perform your play on the 25th and 26th September 2015. We charge £15.00 per ticket and this includes a meal which works out about £4.50 per head. Could you please let me know the royalties for each performance. Thank you, Sandra Drama Director.
About Stag Theatre Company The Stag Theatre Company started life as the in-house amateur group at the Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks (alongisde but separate from Stag Tech which professionally showcased the theatre's technical facilities in their productions). Originally membership took the form of a "Pool of Talent" with entry by audition in front of a panel of 3 people. The productions were both musicals and drama and went under the banner of Stag Theatre productions. When there was a change of management and the theatre became Sevenoaks Playhouse the amateur group was told that they could no longer be in-house. We therefore resolved to continue on our own and to call ourselves Stag Theatre Company. We had no funds at all as we had not needed them before since everything was provided for us by the theatre. We were given the opportunity to do one production at the theatre rent-free to try and make some money - this final rent-free show was an excellent production of Habeas Corpus. Since then we have done musicals, plays, revues, murder mysteries and fund raising events and built up modest reserves to enable us to continue.

    Featuring:

Batten down the hatches! Here come the snowbirds!
    BY BARRY EVANS

Batten down the hatches! Put out the sandbags! Build a 12' fence - no that never keeps anybody out. (I don't know why they do not build a 13-foot fence. Many people are superstitious and the "13" might make them afraid to climb over). I am referring to the often dreaded flood of snowbirds that is about to descend on us. Now, I have some friends that are snowbirds and can hardly wait for them to come back. However, they are only a few. It is all those other snowbirds. Now I know the merchants have big grins on their faces, and the restaurant owners are out buying more food, and contractors are lining up their people. Even the gasoline station owners are smiling heavily because they know that 441/27 will be one big traffic jam from Stonecrest on the North into Lady Lake - and that is not mentioning that it will take two or three lights to cross over 466 on Morse Avenue. Please note that it will not just be the snowbirds buying gas. It will be everyone in the Villages chugging gas as they wait in traffic. Then, again I guess we should feel sorry for the poor snowbirds. They get it both ways. When they come down here, they hear about full time residents not being able to get on the golf courses and sit at their favorite restaurants. Did you realize that when they go north in the summer, they hear the same thing up there about all the sunbirds coming up from Florida just to escape a little heat and lousing up their golf courses and restaurants. They are one of the last groups that it is probably politically correct to complain about. Perhaps, we should have a benefit dinner for them. Mid-August would be a good time! Speaking of being politically correct, it used to be that as you drove around you would see signs that said "men working". You rarely see those anymore. What you do see are signs that say "workers ahead" or "maintenance next mile" so that you will slow down and not run over those who are serving the public. Personally, I think this is great. Now when you go down the highway and see two people working and four watching they can be either men or women or some combination of the two. Progress is wonderful!

I just realized that I may have already been too late when I spoke of the coming flood of snowbirds. As an example we try to make the monthly meetings of the Old-Time Radio Drama Club. They had been meeting at the Bacall Center, but the room was too small for the number of people who wanted to attend. Therefore last Thursday they moved to the Seabreeze Regional Center and met in a much larger room. Naturally, the room was still full. It must be the snowbirds/sunbirds. I should have known as it took me two lights that day to cross 466 on Morse.

The radio Club did a live presentation of an old radio program involving Dick Piston Hotel Detective. That series was one of which I had never heard. (How about that sentence, I avoided putting the preposition at the end). The program was pretty funny and since it is seventy or more years old there was not one concern about snowbirds. Old Dick Piston was not the usual detective either - he could not work past midnight as his boss would fire anybody who asked for overtime. Come to think about it the first victim was on his honeymoon so he could have been a snowbird - or even a sunbird. The dialogue did not go into that aspect, but it could have been the start of the unfounded complaints about our friends the snowbirds.

As I have indicated some of my best friends are snowbirds so there is probably some good in all of them! Let's give them three cheers! . . . ah, come on everybody!

Barry Evans writes about "Life in The Villages" for Villages-News.com

Hello, Jeff - I would like permission to perform "Murder by Midnight, Dick Piston Hotel detective." I run The Villages Old Time Radio Drama Club in The Villages, Florida, a large adult retirement community in the heart of Florida. We have a Players group that performs for our monthly club meetings. Audiences typical range from 40 to 80. We are non profit and charge no fee to the attendees. I found your script in TenMinutePlays.com. May I have your permission for one performance of this play? There is a website for the club that has just been inaugurated. TheVillagesOldTimeRadio.club (yes, dot club). Thanks, Ed Williams 352-750-5067
The Villages Old Radio Club is one of many specialty clubs in The Villages, Florida. It's objective is to bring back old time radio shows on recordings and provides actors a venue to re-create old time radio shows. News Flash ... News Flash ... News Flash ... News Flash ... News Flash ... Due to the overwealming interest and growing attendence at the Monthly Meetings we have found it necessary to move to a new larger location. The Villages Old Time Radio Club will still meet the1st Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm but will move to the new location for the October Meeting. This is our 5th collaboration with the Drama Club. Four CTC directors lead a team of student actors and technicians in producing short plays that are outside the box. It's fun, it's weird, and it's a great educational opportunity for everyone!

Dear Mr. Goode, My name is Peter Green, and I am a faculty advisor at Rye High School in Rye, NY. We have an annual workshop program we call Senior Scenes. Drama club members from the senior class direct 10 minutes pieces (either plays or scenes from full-length works), casting underclassmen in the roles. As they direct their actors, we mentor the directors, not only about stagecraft and staging, but also about coaching actors and being healthy supportive leaders. We do two workshop performances, a matinee and an evening in early December. This year we are scheduled for Saturday, December 5. Although our auditorium seats 725 people, our average attendance for each workshop performance is around 175. Generally our total audience for this annual event is roughly 350 people. Our ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Faculty members and administrators are admitted for free. One of our senior directors has submitted your play "Murder by Midnight" for their senior scene. I'm writing to request a quote for the performance rights. Thanks for considering your request. I look forward to your reply. Best regards, Peter Green, Rye City Schools
