THE EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES

November 19-21st at 7:30 p.m. and the 22nd at 2 p.m.

Cameron University’s Department of Art, Music, and Theatre Arts will continue its 2020-21 theatre season, celebrating “Festival XI: Connections: Information Transfer Between People,” with Jeff Goode’s “The Eight: The Reindeer Monologues.” This dark comedy will be presented in the University Theatre from November 19 to 22 The curtain goes up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for senior citizens, military, Cameron faculty and staff, and non-Cameron students. CU students receive Free admission with their CU I.D. Due to COVID-19 protocols, seating is limited and tickets must be reserved in advance. To reserve tickets, call the box office at 580-581-2478 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Scandal erupts at the North Pole when one of Santa's eight tiny reindeer accuses him of sexual harassment. As mass media descends upon the event, the other members of the sleigh team demand to share their perspectives. A horrific tale of corruption and perversion emerges, which seems to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to the tainted Saint himself. With each deer's confession, the truth behind the shocking allegations becomes clearer and clearer…and murkier and murkier.

Lawtonians Curtis Myers and Ciara Renée play the roles of Dasher and Vixen, respectively. They are joined by Cole Nowlin, Anadarko, as Comet; Aubrey Waxler, Del City, as Blitzen; Connor Reid, Snyder, as Cupid; Mark Branson, Fletcher, as Hollywood; Shalyn Bowles, Geronimo, as Dancer; and Dakota Barbee, Walters, as Donner.

The design team is made up of Cameron University students. Stephanie Sabol, Lawton, is the stage manager. Sidni Blalock, Duncan, is the make-up designer and sound board operator; Maliah Davis, Lawton, is the lighting board operator; Emily Whatley, Duke, is the scenic charge artist; and Carmen Head, Alvarado, Texas, is the house manager.

Faculty working on the show include Associate Professor Eric Abbott, costume designer; and Assistant Professor Ben Williams, lighting and scenic designer. Professor Scott Richard Klein serves as the director of the production.

Meet "The Eight."  The reindeer all dish about Santa, one by one, as the mass media
descends upon the event. With each deers confession, the truth behind the shocking
allegations becomes clearer and clearer....and more murkier.
This is a social satire with a Christmas setting. Plenty of laughs, but also with some
eerily similiar parallels of present.

About Rudolph's little secret? About Vixen's story that was leaked to the press? All true. Yes, the reindeer finally speak up and -- believe us they do not hold back!

"The Eight," for all its absurdist trappings and talk of Santa, is a very adult, very dark play. Throughout there are moments of equally dark, equally adult humor that produce a lot of uneasy laughter - only because there is a great deal of discomfiting truth to the story - or rather, stories - being told.

What's been happening 5 years on since our last correspondence? You don't need to tell me. I've been out of the country for a very long time but I still get all the news!
I'm thinking of getting the herd back together for a couple or three performances of The Eight. Fortunately, here in Thailand, performance venues are open, albeit with social distancing guidelines in effect. I think I can pull it off and I just wanted to let you know before I contacted the publisher. Or would you prefer I go through you?

Mission Statement

The mission of Mesa Encore Theatre (MET) is to produce live theatre with integrity and dedication to excellence. We strive to contribute to the cultural experience of our community as well as provide fun and educational opportunities that nurture the talents of local theatre artists of all ages.

Brief MET History

When Joseph S. Jarvis became head of Mesa Parks and Recreation Department in 1937, his desire was “to make Mesa a beautiful place for all to live”. Recognizing the need for a community recreational and cultural program, one of his first orders of business was to start a theatre group. From its humble beginnings on a school stage, to loading flats and properties on a truck and traveling to performance locations, MET has remained a part of Mesa’s cultural experience for over 75 years.

Throughout those years, thousands of volunteers have worked to carry on the Jarvis legacy. By donating their time, talent and financial support, MET has produced over 200 full length plays and musicals. MET has brought together members of the community to act, sing, build sets, stage manage, run lights and sound, plus much more. We believe that’s what community theatre is all about!

Today, Mesa Encore Theatre still operates through the efforts of volunteers working to provide a wonderful evening of live theatre season after season. We hope you will join us and share in the experience as we present some of theatre’s greatest theatrical productions, both historical and current.
