'Eight Reindeer Monologues' Not Your Average Holiday Production

by Sarah Lentz

"It's not our traditional holiday type of show," Rusty Ruth, Wayne State College professor and director of Wayne Community Theatre's holiday play, "The Eight Reindeer Monologues," by Jeff Goode.

The play follows a scandal that rocks the North Pole.

"Santa has been accused of some wrongdoing with one of the reindeers and then it's sort of, he-said-she-said sort of thing," Ruth said. "You have the reindeers giving their own confessionals, some of them support the victim, some of them support Santa. It's very much a #MeToo piece."

While the timely topic seems very serious, Ruth said the show is, in fact, a comedy, albeit a dark comedy. The suggested age range for the show is solidly 18-years-old and up.

"It's just something you know that we hope to see you know you can shine a light on potential issues that can happen in any community," Ruth said.

Though #MeToo and the general theme seems like it could be ripped from the headlines, "The Eight Reindeer Monologues" was actually written in 1994, and Ruth has some experience with the show. "It's a show I saw originally 10 years ago, and I thought it was it was really funny and I read it and it just struck me as something that was very topical. It's open ended enough where you could say, maybe perhaps this character didn't do anything wrong," Ruth said.

Ruth, who is in his first year at Wayne State, said he's enjoyed working with the small cast including college professors and students.

"Everyone's doing a bang up job with it. I'm getting that nice mix of gallows humor with the stuff that's very serious," Ruth said.

"Eight Reindeer Monologues" will run Dec. 5-7 with all shows beginning at 7 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre. On Dec. 6-7, doors will open at 6 and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door.

The Wayne Community Theatre is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to foster, promote, encourage and increase the practice and appreciation of theatrical performing in Wayne and the surrounding area.

As the only community arts organization in Wayne, the Wayne Community Theatre provides our town with an opportunity for community members of all ages and backgrounds to work together to share their love of theatre and performing.

The board members of the WCT have been working hard in recent years to increase the number of productions within a season, so theatre lovers can can enjoy attending more performances right here in their home town. This has included bringing in Missoula Children’s Theatre each summer, and partnering with the Sioux City theatrical company New Stage Players.

    SHOW SYNOPSIS:

"When a doe says 'no', she means 'no'."

A dark, dark Christmas comedy. Scandal erupts at the North Pole when one of Santa's eight tiny reindeer accuses him of sexual harassment. As mass media descends upon the event, the other members of the sleigh team demand to share their perspectives, and a horrific tale of corruption and perversion emerges, which seems to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to the tainted Saint himself. With each deer's confession, the truth behind the shocking allegations becomes clearer and clearer. ...and murkier and murkier.

    ROLES

Dasher (M): First Reindeer and leader of the pack each Christmas run. He refuses to speak on the scandal. Alpha male "bro" type.

Cupid (M): The only openly gay Reindeer, and extremely proud of it. He is practically a caricature but he knows, and has seen, some shit.

Hollywood (M): Also known as Prancer, his personality has changed some since the release of his movie and the launch of his acting career. He wonders how Vixen's accusation will affect his notoriety.

Blitzen (F): Vixen's chief supporter during the scandal and leader of the walk-out against Santa. Strong feminist character.

Comet (M): *THIS ROLE HAS ALREADY BEEN CAST* A reformed convict, saved from a life of drugs and crime by the Claus family, he's Santa's biggest advocate and supporter. He believes Santa is beyond reproach.

Dancer (F) : Former ballet professional who joined The Eight not long after her studio was burned in protest of Reindeer dancers. She really needs this job.

Donner (M): Rudolph's father and unemployed herd deer, he was placed on The Eight by Santa to help keep him quiet after the infamous "Foggy Christmas" incident. Racked with guilt and doesn't expect anyone to understand why.

Vixen (F): *THIS ROLE HAS ALREADY BEEN CAST* Attempting to press charges against Santa for sexual assault, her sordid past does not lend credibility to her accusations. But just because she's posed for Playboy and has a healthy sex life doesn't mean she "deserved it". She is a blunt characterization of how many victims are treated by the justice system and media. She doesn't want this attention.
