The Belle of Amherst is a one-woman show directed by
Donna Agee, administrative assistant of Student Affairs. The show
portrays the life of Emily Dickinson.
Almost all of Dickinsons life was spent in and around her
birthplace; Amherst. Dickinson lived a more intense and passionate
life than many people think.
Jenna Raye Cox, who plays Dickinson, is performing to earn credit
in her theatre capstone class.
Dr. Mike Chanslor, interim chair of the communication and theatre
department said all theatre majors are required to complete capstone.
A capstone experience is very important for theatre majors
because it gives them some real-life experience and a chance to
handle the pressure of a one person show, said Chanslor.
Cox is a member of Alpha Psi Omega, the dramatic fraternity. Aside
from the NSU theatre productions, they have sponsored The Eight
Reindeer Monologues.
Alpha Psi Omega is based on a point system.
Members earn points by participating in theatre productions, whether
acting or helping to create costumes.
Not only is it educational, its interesting. I dont
think a lot of people know a lot about her as a person. It will
be entertaining for people to come see, said Cox.
Julie Hamilton, stage manager, has high hopes for the show.
Jennas done a really great job so far. Shes brought
a lot of life to her character, said Hamilton.
According to the lighting technician, Brad Powers, the lights and
set are basic.
For being a one-woman show, it really holds your attention,
said Powers.
They wanted the audience to concentrate more on the character.
Its a very interesting perspective, one I hadnt
conceived of. Its a great way to hear her (Dickinsons)
poems and find out a lot about her, said Hamilton.
